Holiday Time with Family
What I love most about the holiday season are family gatherings. Kids are home from school and adults get a few days off between Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s. There is nothing like relaxing at home, wearing pajamas and feeling toasty around the fireplace on chilly nights. Just thinking about it gives me all the cozy feelings!
Although my family doesn’t celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday, we totally get into the holiday spirit with some annual traditions we have set up. These are my top 3 favourite activities that you, too, can enjoy with your family and friends:
1) Be Active and Get Moving
What is holiday time in Canada without some outdoor fun in winter wonderland? Winter is the perfect time to get out for activities like skiing, skating, snowboarding and tubing. After, we love warming up around a roasting fire with smores and hot cocoa. It is pure bliss! Staying active is a great way to burn off all that excess sugar that everyone tends to consume in this season. So put on your thermal, pull up your snowsuit and explore the outdoors!
If getting out in the cold is not your cup of tea, you can enjoy many indoor activities like bowling, rock climbing or jumping around in trampoline parks. The possibilities are endless!
2) Host Family & Friends Sleepovers
Holiday time is perfect for sleepovers especially for little kids. We started hosting sleepovers with some of our kids’ cousins and slowly started to invite some close friends over the years too. An important thing to remember for kids’ sleepovers is to make sure that there are at least two responsible adults available for supervision. After that, you don’t have to worry much about kids’ entertainment as they keep themselves very busy with games, movies & all the chit chat. Add some delicious food to the mix and they will have the time of their lives! My favourite snack to serve the kids is Zabiha Halal’s Chicken Fries, delish for parents and kids alike.
Speaking of food, baking is a great activity for kids. Get kids involved in baking and decorating a cake or gingerbread cookies. It can get a little messy but totally worth all the memories they will make.
As a quick and easy main course, pizzas are definitely everyone’s favourite. Keep some Zabiha Halal Pepperoni Pizzas in your freezer so you can bake them in your oven and have them ready to be devoured within 15 minutes. You can also have fun with DIY pizza toppings during family gatherings. Check out our blog post for three ways you can get creative with Zabiha Halal Pizzas at home.
Another traditional holiday time food in my household is the Chicken & Egg Sandwich that we eat in in the morning for breakfast. We fry the Zabiha Halal Breakfast Chicken Strips in a skillet and place them on a bagel or toast with some butter, mayonnaise, cheese and egg. They are ready in minutes, taste absolutely delicious and look very impressive!
3) Volunteer in the Community
The holiday spirit is all about bringing peace and joy to our homes and communities. As Muslims, it is a great time for us to get involved in volunteer activities both in mosques and non-profit organizations. It is that one time during the year in which your whole family can volunteer together without worrying about school and work schedule conflicts. Take advantage of it and donate your time and energy to those who are less fortunate. There are many food banks, shelters and community centres that will gladly have you come and help with their holiday programs. Go to your local community centre to find programs taking place in your area.
So those are my top 3 recommendations for you for this holiday season! I hope you are inspired to have fun with your family and friends in easy and simple ways.
Happy Holidays! – Anam
