Winters in Canada are a great time to be outside, but depending on your sensitivity to cold, they can be an equally good time to be inside, as well. Personally, I am a homebody in the winter. While my summer is, much like most Canadians, very busy and full of activity, the winter season tends to be much slower. Well, I’m not complaining because I love cozy nights at home with my family, wearing PJs and sipping hot chocolate in front of the fireplace. It is the absolute best!
One of my favourite winter activities is to meet up with my friends and family members one-on-one. Yes, mom & dad included. This is something I started doing a couple of years ago and I can honestly tell you that it is so rewarding. I’m used to meeting friends and family in group settings and while that is a lot of fun, it doesn’t give you that closeness and connection with the people who matter to you.
In the age of social media, it is very easy to assume that you know everything about someone. However, believe me, you will learn so much during this type of personal meeting. You find yourself discussing each other’s aspirations, set-backs, difficult moments and happy times, giving you a much deeper connection. After all, it is the quality of time you spend that matters.
Hosting at Home
Since going out to meet is so common, I find that these meetings are really made special by inviting my friend or family member to my house. It is a gesture that is really valued and appreciated. To keep these meetings as casual and easy-going as possible, I try my best to keep everything simple, especially the food.
Depending on what time of the day someone is coming over, I prepare a simple lunch or dinner with one appetizer and main course, or tea and snacks for evening time. Last weekend, I had an evening date with my sister-in-law. I used two of my favourite Zabiha Halal frozen foods – the Popcorn Chicken and Chicken Fries. These are so easy to prepare – bake them in the oven for 15 minutes on 425F and a super delicious snack is ready.
I find that keeping the menu simple helps puts the guests at ease too. They don’t feel that you have spent all day in kitchen preparing for the meet-up and feel comfortable with coming over more often. to know that you haven’t gone out of your way to host them. Meet-ups aside, I always keep some of these easy-to-prepare Zabiha Halal products in my freezer for surprise guests too. Keeping these frozen foods on hand is such a time-saver, especially for someone like me who is a busy mom of two.
So go ahead and try this with a friend this winter! Invite them over, catch up with each other, and if you run out of things to talk about, there is always Netflix show you can watch together. It is always uncomfortable at first, but most things worth doing lie outside your comfort zone.
Do let me know in the comment below how your meeting went. What did you make? Would you do it again?
Until next time,
